Film Program at the UCF Nicholson School of Communication and Media
Core Skills Courses
Overview
As a student enrolled in a core skills course: FIL 2461C – Cinematography I, FIL 2534C – Sound Design I and/or FIL 2552C – Editing I you have a variety of resources available to complete course media assignments and individual development. These include access to NSCM Media Labs and the checkout of media equipment.
Policy Requirements
Students are required to complete the Film Student Policy Form before they can checkout equipment or use facility spaces. This form only has to completed once each semester to cover all courses.
Facility Access
After the Add / Drop deadline, enrolled students can electronically access FMM Media Labs | NSC-211A and 211B as well as the FMM Production Lab | NSC-143 using their UCF ID cards when classes are not being held in these spaces. Please use the Activity Calendars located on the FMM Media Lab resource page to help determine when these spaces are available for open and assisted lab hours.
If you are unable to access the Media Labs or have been issued a replacement UCF ID card, please fill out the Access Card Issue Form for assistance.
Network Storage
Media files to support skills course work are available to students at program-supported macOS workstations within the FMM Media Labs NSC-211A & 211B. Instructions on how to access our Media Network Storage can be found in the Media Storage article.
Equipment Checkout
Assignment Window
FIL 2461C, 2534C, 2552C – Skill Courses have an open assignment window.
Equipment checkout typically begins the third week of the Fall and Spring semesters and ends on the last days of classes (Finals Week is not included). If Cinematography 1 or Sound Design 1 is offered during the Summer, it typically begins the second week of the semester and ends on the last day of class. If these two classes are not offered, than the checkout window will not be open for Summer.
Start Date: Tuesday, March 3rd, 2026
End Date: Monday, April 27th, 2026
Duration & Frequency
Students can checkout equipment multiple times per semester. Each checkout period is limited to a maximum of four days.
The total number of days includes the pickup and return dates (i.e., equipment checked-out on a Monday would have to be returned on Thursday). Weekend checkouts will be considered as two days (i.e., equipment checked-out on a Friday would have to be returned on Monday).
Due to limitations with our reservation system, we are not able to grant extensions to checked-out equipment. Students can only request one checkout per week. No back-to-back requests can be made (e.g., you must wait at least one business day to submit a new request to allow other students a chance to reserve the equipment).
Equipment List
The current list of equipment that can be checked out for this course can be found by clicking the button below.
