Outline of Coverage
Overview of Production Insurance
Even the most organized and prepared production cannot always avoid incidents, accidents or disputes. Insurance serves as a risk mitigation tool to help absorb the cost of potential loss resulting from injuries, property damage, lawsuits, and other costly risks.
The sections below outline the terms of the production insurance policy coverage maintained by the Nicholson School of Communication and Media , as well as examples of what is NOT covered. However, applicability of any insurance policy, deductibles and exclusions may vary according to circumstances and ultimately is determined by the insurance underwriter.

In general, the Nicholson School’s production insurance policy covers classroom/lab instruction as well as the curricular activities of student media assignments and creative activities that are assigned by the instructor-of-record for a registered course, study, or approved by a thesis chair as part of completing of an approved thesis project. It also covers the faculty production of creative activities.
Certificates of Insurance are only available for sanctioned student and fauclty productions of creative projects. Student and faculty productions that plan on using third-party locations, rent equipment, or have high-risk activities or items in their productions must obtain approval before moving forward.

Auto Liability, Comp, and Collision Coverage
The UCF does NOT provide automobile liability, comprehensive, or collision coverage for vehicle use on student productions. It is required that the owner of the vehicle will have the appropriate insurance coverage and that the student will not void the owner’s insurance coverage through misuse or nondisclosure of uninsured activities. Students must verfy that the neccesary insurance for the vehicle the student owns, or any vehicle rented, leased, or borrowed by the student is in place or obtain it if is not.
Potentially high-risk activities, including the rigging of production equipment inside or outside of a moving vehicle for the purpose of photography or stunts, must be evaluated by the UCF-NSCM-FMM Risk Management Panel and the appropriate insurance rider or policy coverage must be procured if determined necessary.
All rigging of production equipment must be reviewed by production services staff and only performed by qualified members of the crew. If determined by the Risk Management Panel, rigging must be supervised by production service staff.
Additional information regarding the vehicle use in production can be found in the Using Vehicles In Production section of the Production Safety Manual.

Additional Coverage Details
Incident
If an incident occurs that leads to an insurance claim against a production, the student prodcuer is responsible for payment of all costs until the deductible is met. Students have 15 business days to make this payment to the program unless otherwise stipulated by school administration.
If the student damages or loses Film Program owned equipment, the student must pay a $2,500.00 deductible for each loss.
Personal items owned by students are not covered under the school’s Inland Marine policy.
Rented Equipment
Prior to renting equipment, props, sets, or wardrobes from third parties, students must seek approval to use the school’s Inland Marine policy coverage to ensure the proper itemized documents, declarations, and COI’s are exchanged between UCF and the vendor. Students who elect to rent from vendors without seeking guidance and approval run the risk of not having those items properly insured.
Please contact the Head of Film Production Services for further details on how to properly rent from third party vendors.
This is the amount the student must pay towards replacing or repairing the item before any amount can be recovered from insurance provide. However, the determination as to what additional amounts may be due from the student and how much the insurance will cover with respect to the lost or damaged equipment will ultimately be determined by the insurance company, so it is possible that the student could be liable for more than just the $2,500.00 deductible.
Student-owned equipment is not covered.
