The Film and Mass Media Program at the UCF Nicholson School of Communication and Media is committed to safe practices during practical instruction, workshops, and the production of student film/video projects. There are few learning benefits to putting cast and crew members in harm’s way on student productions.

The purpose of program’s Risk Management Policy is to prioritize student learning outcomes over high-risk approaches. Given the current state of production techniques and technologies, there is no reason for students to take unnecessary risks while in production. Some of the program’s Risk Management Policy is philosophical driven by the faculty over what they deem to be an acceptable level of risk, the rest is restricted by the limitations of the program’s production insurance policy coverage. Ultimately, it is a business continuity plan to guide the balanced process of producing live action productions at UCF.

Familiarize yourself with this handbook as violations of the Film and Mass Media Program’s Risk Management Policies and the Production Safety Manual are considered infractions of section UCF-5.008 UCF Rules of Conduct of the UCF Golden Rule Student Handbook. Failure to follow coverage parameters, procedures, or policies may result in swift disciplinary actions including grade reduction, probation and even expulsion from the Film BA, BFA, or MFA degree programs.

Safety is Paramount

Student filmmakers are professionals in training and are expected to be honest, safe, and responsible members of the production culture at UCF and within in the Central Florida community at large.

Film and television sets are a dynamic workplace that is typically fast paced, high demand, and often stressful as conditions change from day-to-day. Because of this, the best way to avoid accidents is to be aware of your working environment, what equipment is being used, and what risks may be present on each day of production.

The Production Safety Manual section of this handbook is meant to serve as a critical framework that students are expected to know, follow, and to hold each other accountable to safe and professional practices during production.
